What to Bring
TETANUS Booster is needed every 10 years
ORAL TYPHOID Oral typhoid is good for 5 years (4 pills, take 1 every other day), finishing a week before you leave.
OR - Injectable typhoid is good for 2 years
HEPATITIS A Initial injection plus a follow-up booster is good for 10-20 years
Once you get the Hepatitis A injection, you need to get the booster
any time from 6 months to 1 year later.
(You are covered by the initial Hepatitis A shot).
MALARIA RX You need to get the prescription from your doctor.
Brand Name Aralen, or Generic Chloroquine 500 mg. One pill a week for 6 weeks. Take one pill a week before you leave, one pill the same day the next week while you are gone, then the remaining 4 pills once a week when you get home.
OR…
Brand Name Lariam, or Generic Mefloquine 250 mg. One pill a week for 6 weeks.
(We found out the generic for Aralen is cheaper than the generic
for Lariam, but whichever your doctor prescribes is ok.)
